Woman, 22, creating dresses for TV stars from her bedroom

A 22-year-old has been creating dresses for TV stars from her bedroom.

Megan Ruiter, from Birkenhead, Wirral, spends her days and nights sewing bespoke clothes for celebs from Love Island and The Only Way is Essex.

She recently finished a four-year Liverpool John Moores University course and set up her own fashion brand - Ruiter - which creates partywear and dresses for special occasions.

Megan always knew she wanted to work in fashion after she was taught how to sew by her stepdad when she was seven.

She said she has often been complimented on how fast she can sew and can make a full dress within two hours.

Her Ruiter.co.uk Instagram now has more than 15,900 followers and remarkably she still makes every single piece sold herself, but has upgraded from her bedroom with the help of mum, Gail Formston, and stepdad Malcolm, both 51.

Megan said: "I hope to get to the position to hire someone in the future, it can get pretty stressful at times, especially when I have been working alongside uni.

"I now work from our extension, my family has been so supportive."

Since finishing uni business has continued to boom for Megan, she said: "I have had the opportunity to work with some celebrities such as Gabby Allen and Georgia Steel.

"I created Jess Wright's [from The Only Way is Essex] hen party dress which was featured in a magazine and online.

"It was so amazing to see and such a great feeling.

"Sometimes my friends will message me on Instagram and say 'is this yours?' with a picture of a dress."

Megan has also been able to develop more of her style following the flurry of custom orders from celebs.

She said: "I think when I started I didn't really have an overall style, I just had a bit of everything.

"But now I am really developing my own style and I am more aware of who my customer is."

Megan is busy sewing day and night from her bedroom herself, but has big dreams for her brand.

She said: "I am quite ambitious and I would love to see myself with a warehouse and a team within the next five years."

The Ruiter Winter Wonderland Fashion Show takes place at the Shankly Hotel on November 25. Tickets on sale here.
