Wolfsberger 1-4 Tottenham: Gareth Bale strikes as Spurs take firm grip on last-32 tie

Tottenham put one foot into the last 16 of the Europa League with a 4-1 victory over Austrian side Wolfsberger in the first leg of their last-32 tie.

Son Heung-min, Gareth Bale, Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius were all on target for Jose Mourinho's side who turned in a ruthless first-half performance to race into a 3-0 lead at the break.

Spurs were without Harry Kane who did not travel, but they didn't need their talisman to brush off their opponents in Budapest.

Son has often shone in Kane's absence and he did again as he gave Spurs a 13th-minute lead.

A nice move saw Matt Doherty play in Bale and the Wales international picked out Son, who headed into the far corner.

Bale doubled Tottenham's lead with a brilliant goal just before the half-hour.

Doherty again played in the Welshman and he cut back inside onto his left foot, leaving Jonathan Scherzer for dead before lashing a shot into the far corner.

Lucas Moura made it 3-0 with a sublime solo goal in the 34th minute.

The Brazilian breezed past three men and into the box before firing low into the corner to put Spurs in total command.

Michael Liendl gave Wolfsberger hope early in the second half as he scored from the penalty spot after Moussa Sissoko needlessly clattered into Christopher Wernitznig.

Vinicius poked home from close range late on to restore Spurs' three-goal cushion ahead of next week's return leg.
