'Woke' pub gets mixed reaction as it turns ploughman's lunch to ploughperson

A Devon pub has received a mixed response after renaming the classic ploughman’s lunch dish "ploughperson", LancsLive reports. The Tors pub in the village of Belstone, Devon decided to make the politically correct change to bring the lunch in line with modern thinking and to reflect the many women who farm in the region - but the move soon went viral on social media.

The famous dish, including bread, onion, cheese and pickles, is a classic on the pub menu at a cost of £12.50. The original name can be traced back to 1837.

The landlord described the change as “a bit of fun” - but the eatery was soon accused of "wokeness". Twitter user Charlotte Deakins posted an image of the pub's menu showing the new name - and the news travelled fast.

The 36-year-old told the Telegraph: “Quite frankly, my reaction is that it is pandering and dangerous, unless the pub owners have done it in a tongue-in-cheek manner and I hope they have. The tweet has gained some traction and people are absolutely sick of the nonsense and having to pussyfoot around because of a small minority who are eternally offended.”

But Tors Pub landlord Dicky Harrison defended the move as "tongue in cheek" and a "bit of fun". He said it was a salute to the female farmers in the area because "in reality, women plough too".

One angry user wrote on Twitter: "How f**king pathetic to rename the Ploughmans lunch a Ploughperson? I would suggest this pub is boycotted until they get a life & start acting like adults - its a PLOUGHMAN'S."

Another said: "Sorry guys, won’t be visiting a ‘woke’ pub for my lunch. Yes, there are lots of women farmers today and I salute them, but stop changing the past."

A third commented "It’s like saying we can’t call the moon the moon any more" while another said “Soon Mother’s Day & Father’s Day will be forbidden.”
