With Bucs making history by playing Super Bowl at home, Rams can do the same next year

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take the field in Super Bowl LV less than two weeks from now, they’ll be making history. Not because Tom Brady has a chance to win his seventh ring, but by being the first team ever to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

It’s something that was never done in the previous 54 Super Bowls, but the Bucs chose the perfect year to make it back to the big game with it being held at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

It’s a long way out, but next February, the Rams will have a chance to join the Bucs as the only other team to play a home Super Bowl. SoFi Stadium will be the host of Super Bowl LVI in 2022, giving the Rams (and Chargers) the chance to play in their own stadium.

It’s a goal Rams COO Kevin Demoff mentioned in his letter to season-ticket holders last week, saying the team would love to run out of the tunnel at SoFi Stadium next February.

“In a few weeks, we will kick off the year-long countdown to Los Angeles hosting Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, and our goal is to run out of our own locker room tunnel for that game,” he wrote.

The Rams actually played close to home in 1980 when the game was held at the Rose Bowl, but it wasn’t technically their home stadium. This would absolutely be a home game, and after playing in an empty SoFi Stadium for the entire 2020 season, it would only be fitting for the Rams to play a Super Bowl in the $5 billion building next year.

Again, that’s looking way out into the future, but it’s worth mentioning because of the fact that the Buccaneers will become the first team to do it in two weeks. Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium will be held on Feb. 6, 2022, so the Rams have a little more than a year to build a championship-caliber team.

After 54 years of teams never playing a home Super Bowl, it would be incredible if the Rams could make it two years in a row next season.
