Wintry showers, thunder and hail expected over the weekend

The North East is in for a particularly wintry weekend with even a risk of thunder and hail.

Snow will start making an appearance on higher ground from Friday and will continue into the weekend and become heavier at times.

There'll also be strong winds and rain showers which could even become hail on Sunday.

Here's what the Met Office says to expect:

Friday

"A dry start, but cloud thickening, with outbreaks of rain spreading in from mid-morning.

"Initially these may be wintry but should turn increasingly to rain at lower levels with snow becoming confined to hills for the afternoon.

"Southeasterly winds freshening. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

Friday evening

"Becoming less windy and largely dry during the evening.

"However, further outbreaks of rain and strong winds will spread northwards shortly after midnight. Minimum temperature 3 °C."

Saturday

"Rain and hill snow clearing during the morning.

"Dry and sunny for a time, but showers, wintry and heavy in places, developing in the afternoon, along with very strong winds. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday

"Sunny spells and scattered showers, heavy at times, with snow on hills and a risk of thunder and hail. Very windy Sunday but winds gradually easing through Monday and Tuesday."
