Winona Ryder's trouble with social media: 'She thought Snapchat was chips'

Winona Ryder is the reigning queen of indie cool, a status only reaffirmed by her role in the evocative eighties-themed Netflix drama Stranger Things.

But while Ryder's trademark startled gaze has made her the poster child for Tumblr and her iconic performances are shared in film stills and gifs across Facebook and Instagram, she is, apparently, not so social media savvy. The actress, 44, mistook Snapchat for a brand of crisps, according to her co-star Millie Bobby Brown.

In a joint interview with Variety, the 12-year-old, who plays Eleven in Stranger Things, said Ryder’s absence from social media meant many aspects of it confuse her: “She thought Snapchat was chips.”

Ryder insists it was all a simple misunderstanding.

“Because in Heathers we had the Snappy Snack Shack. It was the 7-Eleven place. I thought [Snapchat] had something to do with food.”

But Brown, who has dipped her toes into the world of social media, wasn't having any of it. “We were doing Snapchat on lunch. I have the best picture of her, with the bee [filter]. I got you at the right time. She got so scared.”
