Windows 'smashed' at plush £2,000-a-night Edinburgh hotel as one man taken to hospital

Cops have arrested a suspected vandal after windows were allegedly smashed at a plush Edinburgh city centre hotel.

Officers were called to the five-star Grand Hotel off exclusive St Andrew Square shortly after 9am on Tuesday.

The 58-year-old arrested man was taken to hospital after suffering slight injuries.

Photos showed panes smashed on the third floor and what looked like a broken lamp dangling through one window.

Three damaged windows were clearly visible from the West Register Street side of the building.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 9.05am on Tuesday, 2 June, we were called to reports of a man vandalising a business on St Andrew Square.

“Officers attended and a 58-year-old man was arrested. He has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

It was unclear how the windows were smashed but the damage is understood to have been done from the outside.

Below the windows is a fenced-off area to carry out repaving work on West Register Street.

The former RBS building opened as a luxury hotel two years ago after an £85m refit.

It boasts Edinburgh’s ‘most exclusive suite’ – a £2,000-a-night three-bedroom, rooftop Penthouse with 360-degree panoramic views of the capital.

Owners Lateral City Apartments announced their rooms “are available to look after those in need, key workers and essential travellers only” during lockdown.
