Sonay Kartal sailed through in straight sets against Diane Parry to progress into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time.

Kartal, the British No3, opened proceedings on Court No1 against the tricky French qualifier, who had stuned both Petra Martic and then 12th seed Diana Shnaider en route to her meeting with Kartal, but the Briton, after a shaky start, won through 6-4 6-2.

Parry was in the ascendancy in the early exchanges, earning an initial break to go up 4-1, but Kartal rallied hard to get her rhythm back, and roared back to take the opening set and dampen Parry’s determination. Her French opponent would begin to crumble thereafter, with the mistakes swinging the Frenchwoman’s way and the pendulum in the other, as Kartal cruised to a more comfortable second set, where she sets up a fourth-round encounter against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

A big cheer for Kartal, and no wonder. The crowd here on Court No1 hope she will serve herself into the round of 16 here.

She shanks wide on the first point but is gifted a point back when Parry then nets.

Excellent winner from Kartal for 30-15. And then a stonking ace! She has two match points!!!

SHE’S DONE IT! She’s into the fourth round for the very first time!

Parry moves to the net to good effect, slamming the ball down and forcing Kartal to net.

That’s for 30-15 Parry on her own serve, and it’s 40-15 when Kartal’s backhand slice is into the tramlines.

That is MUCH more like it from Parry, who serves powerfully for the first time in a long time and causes Kartal problems. The Brit can only watch as Parry fires a crosscourt winner past her for game.

Parry is struggling to get her forehands over the net right now, owing, I’m sure, to Kartal’s hard hitting. It’s 30-0 Kartal when she serves at Parry and the Frenchwoman can’t return in. 40-0.

An outstanding point from Kartal gets her back to 15-15 on Parry’s serve, big-hitting and then a nonchalant putaway on the backhand volley.

Parry can only pass into the net, and soon it’s 15-30 and Kartal is in the hunt for a double break.

Even more so when she bullets the ball back at Parry and prompts her opponent to net once more. 15-40. Two break points.

And the world No51 gets it! Wow. What a performance this is turning into from Sonay Kartal.

It’s all a little too routine for Kartal right now. After such a strong start to the match, Parry has dropped off and hits beyond the baseline for 40-0 Kartal.

The British No3 then nets on approach, but she wins the next point on a long rally, striking onto the line and prompting a gasp from the crowd who were impressed by that.

An unreturned serve will do nicely, but Parry hits back. Then she goes long, though, and it is indeed four games apiece.

Kartal spots her chance to break back as the ball gets caught under Parry’s racquet on a seemingly simple return and brings up 0-30. And then WOW... a fantastic winner fired past Parry makes it 0-40 to Kartal and three break points arrive.

Two misses see the first two break points go awry, and then after a marathon rally Kartal hits the net and the third is gone too. Deuce. Tense stuff.

Kartal moves 30-0 up when Parry nets with the first point and goes long on the second.

An unreturned serve follows for 40-15, and a line ace will give Kartal plenty of confidence. She holds firm.

A hint of trouble for Kartal is swiftly cleared away as she slams down two aces to go from 15-30 down to 40-30 ahead.

And then a really poor second serve lands MILES out and it’s deuce.

Kartal wastes one advantage by firing beyond the baseline, and Parry earns a break point with a deft drop shot at the net. It’s a lovely touch, with Kartal nowhere near it.

And with a crosscourt winner, Parry breaks!

But it’s saved brilliantly by Parry, and the Frenchwoman moves advantage up with a strong serve before holding.

Kartal has been in fine form at this Championships, the British No3 having stunned the 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko before easily getting past Viktoriya Tomova in the second round.

Parry has been producing scalps herself, knocking out Petra Martic and then the 12th seed Diana Shnaider in the last round. She is, though, ranked much lower than Kartal and the Briton must just get it done today, I reckon.

We’re coming to you live from Court No1 as Kartal seeks to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon — and, indeed, a Grand Slam — for the very first time.

The 23-year-old British No3 faces a qualifier this afternoon, in the form of French competitor Diane Parry, who is more experienced at Majors than Kartal but has also never reached the fourth round of one.

Play gets underway at 1pm here on Court No1, who has only ever played on a show court once before — the same court, at the same stage last year against Coco Gauff.

We’ll have all the build-up to the match, as well as game by game updates from live inside the venue.
