Jack Draper vs Sebastian Baez - LIVE!
“I wanted to play a bit longer in all honesty,” was the verdict from Jack Draper after booking his place in the second round at Wimbledon. That the British number one needed just 74 minutes to do so is no bad thing, though, body and mind kept fresh for sterner tests to come.
Draper was 6-2 6-2 2-1 up against Sebastian Baez on No1 Court and sprinting towards the finish line when his injured opponent came over to shake hands and bring a premature end to proceedings. The Argentine had twice had the physios on court, seemingly having his right knee stretched out having suffered an awkward slip behind the baseline earlier in the match.
An injured opponent or not, this was a confident start to Draper’s Wimbledon campaign, his first as a genuine title contender and with all the expectation and distractions that come with that. The 23-year-old has now already matched his best Wimbledon run, and it would be a big shock if 2017 finalist Marin Cilic ensured that remained the case beyond Thursday.

Personal best to come?
20:00 , Matt VerriJack Draper is through to the second round, which he has now done three times at Wimbledon.
He’s yet to feature in the third round - Draper fell in his second match last year to fellow Brit Cameron Norrie.
Would be a big shock if Draper failed to make round three this year, for all Marin Cilic has enjoyed Wimbledon success in the past.
Draper lost just six points out of 42 on serve in that match. Utterly dominant.
Baez was evidently struggling with that problem to his right leg, but Draper was well on top even before that slip.
Start the hype train...
One match at a time...
19:23 , Matt VerriAnd that match is former Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic on Thursday!
"I can't be thinking about five matches ahead."

“I wanted to play a bit longer,” says Draper.
Come week two, I’m sure he’ll be looking back on this as a big boost.
Carlos Alcaraz was on court for four and a half hours yesterday.
Baez retires!
19:08 , Matt VerriAnd that’s that on No1 Court.
Baez unable to continue, he walks over to shake Draper’s hand and the British No1 is through to the second round.
Just 74 minutes on court.
Draper 6-2 6-2 *2-1 Baez
19:07 , Matt VerriForget Draper’s serve, Baez has problems on his own.
Double fault and it’s 0-30. Draper then dominates from the back of the court, forces the error and earns himself three break points.
One is all he needs! Great return and Draper is sprinting towards the finish line.
Draper 6-2 6-2 1-1* Baez
19:05 , Matt VerriDraper has won 32 out of 36 points on serve so far. Pretty decent.
There’s two more to add to the tally, as Draper watches yet another return sail harmlessly out.
There’s point number five on the Draper serve for Baez, as the Briton nets a backhand, but that’s as good as it gets.
Third set levelled up.
Draper 6-2 6-2 *0-1 Baez
19:01 , Matt VerriBaez’s knee looks to be ok. That or he’s lost interest and has decided it makes no difference.
Much better start to the set for him, though. 40-0 and eyeing up a rare hold.
Which he gets. Good stuff from the Argentine.
Draper 6-2 6-2 Baez
18:57 , Matt VerriBaez might as well come and take a seat with us in the crowd when Draper is serving.
He’s just watching the serves come thundering down either side of him.
Huge second serve from Draper, kind of risk you can take when you’re this far in front, and it seals the second set.
Draper 6-2 *5-2 Baez
18:54 , Matt VerriCan Baez extend this set, if only for a few minutes?
One unforced error from him is then shanked away by Draper, nearly taking out a cameraman on its descent.
But it’s otherwise a much better game from Baez. A routine hold.
Draper 6-2 5-1* Baez
18:51 , Matt VerriBaez can barely get into a rally on Draper’s serve.
Has a second serve to attack here and jumps all over it with a succession of big forehands, and eventually Draper can’t get it back.
But back to the usual routine - 133mph first serve is unreturned. And then a 126mph ace to seal the hold.
Trainers are back on for Baez... but then quickly back off.
Going to assume there’s more treatment coming at the end of the second set, which might not be far away.
Draper 6-2 *4-1 Baez
18:47Draper drops a return right on the baseline, but Baez deals with it well and forces the error himself.
A brave soul brings out the ‘come on Sebastian’ shout, which is quickly matched with ten for Draper. Not to be denied, the lone ranger replies with three more.
Back on the court, it’s deuce and it goes without saying that this is a must-win game for Baez.
Great point, both players finding the line, but Baez does superbly to stay in it and then get on the front foot to win it.
Not for the first time, Draper throws the kitchen sink at a backhand down the line and watches it fly long. But back to deuce, as Baez nets the forehand.
Break point! Draper launches the ball up, asks the question of Baez’s smash... it’s wild.
SHOT! Draper runs down the drop shot and whips a winner crosscourt for the double break. Huge roar.
Draper 6-2 3-1* Baez
18:40 , Matt VerriPicking up right from where we left off.
Draper’s serve has been superb all match and it carries him to another comfortable game here.
Holds to love, and now he can get to work again on Baez’s serve.
Baez back up on his feet and fine to continue.
Draper to serve as we get back underway after that brief delay.
A second trainer has emerged to have a chat with Baez.
There’s a lot of pointing and talking, doesn’t seem to be much in the way of treatment or strapping going on.
Draper waiting patiently in his seat.
Baez has the trainer out at the change of ends, looks to be his right leg being stretched out.
In better news, a breeze has appeared on Court One, which is just about the first bit of air there’s been at Wimbledon in the past two days.
Draper 6-2 *2-1 Baez
18:34 , Matt VerriHaven’t been too many of these... a comfortable game so far for Baez!
Loose return from Draper lands long, again he looks up to the sky towards the sun. Hasn’t particularly enjoyed this end of the court all match.
Another return is wayward and that’s a hold to love for Baez to get himself on the board in this set.
Draper 6-2 2-0* Baez
18:32 , Matt VerriBaez gets too cute with the drop shot and doesn’t clear the net, before Draper smashes down the latest serve that doesn’t come back.
And another one - Baez not getting a sniff on the Draper serve. Hold to 15.
Draper 6-2 *1-0 Baez
18:27 , Matt VerriBrilliant!
Draper with the flat forehand winner down the line, earns himself a break point.
Which he takes!
Deep return, Baez off balance and he sends the backhand long. Draper cruising.
Draper 6-2 0-0* Baez
18:26 , Matt VerriDrop shot from Draper brings Baez up to the net, and the pass is then good enough to force the mistake with the volley.
Long baseline exchange, Baez slips awkwardly and is left in a heap... but his move is improved slightly when he looks up to see Draper hammered a forehand long in his absence.
Draper responds with a brilliant drop shot - deuce.
Draper 6-2 Baez
18:20 , Matt VerriDraper serving for the set, he’ll get two goes at it if needed.
Looks like one will do, as two big first serves bring up two set points.
Job done! Baez nets his return off the second serve and Draper takes the opening set in 27 minutes.
Draper *5-2 Baez
18:17 , Matt VerriToo good! Draper steps in on a second serve and hammers a winner past the motionless Baez.
Net cord helps the Argentine, dropping perfectly over the net for him. Needs a lot more luck like that, the way this is going.
Should wrap up the game with the serve and volley, but with Draper near enough in row one he sends the volley out.
Not to worry - forehand winner crosscourt, probably his best shot of the match.
Draper 5-1* Baez
18:14 , Matt Verri130mph down the T from Draper, who has not even vaguely been troubled on serve yet.
Won’t be either, if he keeps this standard up. Forehand slapped crosscourt, lands right on the line.
And then an ace out wide to wrap up a hold to love.
Draper *4-1 Baez
18:11 , Matt VerriNods of encouragement from Draper’s box as a couple of forehands misfire to gift Baez two cheap points.
But he’s still right in this game at 30-30, as Baez finds the net.
And now Baez chucks in a double fault, break point for Draper. This to take complete control of the set.
He does! Poor from Baez but the fans inside Court 1 don’t care one bit.
Draper 3-1* Baez
18:08 , Matt VerriDraper back in the shade and he thunders down an ace out wide to kick things off after the change of ends.
About as good a service game as you’ll see. Think Baez contributed about three shots.
Draper *2-1 Baez
18:05 , Matt VerriSun proving a bit awkward for Draper at this end, had the cap on backwards but he’s switched it around as he looks up.
Loose game from the Brit, barely a rally in it as Baez gets himself on the board.
Draper 2-0* Baez
18:03 , Matt VerriDraper wasting no time in getting the serve going. Baez can only send the ball back short and it sits up for Draper to put away the forehand. 30-0.
Another big forehand - crowd decide it’s out and groan but it caught the line. Draper ignores them and puts away the overhead at the net.
Swift hold to 15 to consolidate the break.
Draper *1-0 Baez
17:59 , Matt VerriDeuce again, before Draper then watches the Baez backhand land long to bring up a break point.
Takes it! Another bruising rally from the back of the court, gasps every time Draper steps on that forehand.
Perfect start, he breaks in the opening game.
Draper 0-0* Baez
17:58 , Matt VerriBaez with a couple of unforced errors and it’s an early chance for Draper at 15-30.
No half-measures from the British No1... winds up on the forehand and sends it long. Looking to be aggressive early on.
But he hasn’t quite got the range yet, that’s three forehands in this game that have landed comfortably long.
Shot! Nothing wrong with that one, Draper whips a winner down the line. Deuce.
The pair exchange drops shots and then volleys... Draper can’t quite flick it back over.
Draper won the toss and elected to receive, so it will be Baez to get us up and running in this first-round match.
Jannik Sinner was hugely impressive on this court earlier today in cruising through. Draper will be eyeing something similar.
Here we go!
17:48 , Matt VerriPlayers are out on court.
Baez waiting for the toss, as Draper puts what looks like about 25 different bottles in the fridge behind his seat.
He’s come prepared.
Weather update
17:43 , Matt VerriIt’s hot. Very hot.
About three quarters of Court One is now in the shade, but it’s still very humid.
The actual court is still almost entirely in the sun. These are not going to be comfortable conditions.
Ten-minute warning!
17:36Navarro and Kvitova have made their way off court after that match.
Next up, then, it’s Jack Draper vs Sebastian Baez.
Players due on Court 1 at 5:45pm - so you’ve got ten minutes to get yourselves ready.
Final farewell
17:28 , Matt VerriEmma Navarro wraps up a swift victory over Petra Kvitova in exactly an hour.
That was Kvitova’s final ever match at Wimbledon, and she’s now being interviewed on court.
Not how the two-time champion will have wanted to go out, but it’s been some career.

Not long now!
17:22 , Matt VerriJack Draper might want to get on with his warm-up.
Emma Navarro is 6-3 5-1 up against Petra Kvitova, just a game away from victory and not even an hour played.
Draper and Baez will be up next.
Big win for Evans... and potentially big prize
17:17 , Matt VerriDan Evans says he is dreaming of a Centre Court clash with seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the second round on Thursday after he ousted fellow British wildcard Jay Clarke.
Evans was in fine form on Court 12 as he came through 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 in a commanding straight-sets victory he described as “one of my top, top wins in my career”.
In his pre-tournament press conference, Evans had been drawn to tears by a question about his lowest moment. In an emotional response, the Englishman admitted feeling insecure about whether his family and friends were secretly of the belief that he had passed his peak to the extent that he should retire.
But Birmingham-born Evans defied his 35 years as he got the better of Clarke on a sweltering Court 12, which trapped the heat and was in full sunlight throughout.
Evans’ prize for victory is likely to be a meeting with the 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic, assuming the Serb makes it past France’s Alexandre Muller on Centre Court on Tuesday evening.
Evans, ranked 154th globally, has made it to the fourth round at SW19 but has reached the third round on three occasions, while 196th-ranked Clarke reached the second round for the first and only time in 2019. This is the first time Evans has reached the second round since 2021.

Good news for Draper!
17:07 , Matt VerriThere’s been a lot of talk about how difficult Jack Draper’s draw is, but the situation has improved somewhat.
He was projected to face Alexander Bublik in the third round, the man who knocked him out of the French Open and recently won the title in Halle.
But Bublik lost earlier today to Jaume Munar in five sets, so there will be no showdown for him with Draper.
British No1 won’t be thinking about that though. He, as you’d expected, says he’s only thinking about one match at a time.

Standard Sport prediction
17:01 , Matt VerriIt would be a massive shock if Jack Draper was beaten this evening.
Baez lost in the first round at the Australian Open and the French Open, and has only one main-draw win at Wimbledon to his name.
Draper doesn’t have much SW19 success to his name yet, but he arrives this year as a very different player and should have more than enough to ease into the second round.
Draper to win, straight sets.
