Wimbledon 2019: Martina Navratilova forced to remove Trump 'impeach' hat during legends match

Martina Navratilova was told by Wimbledon officials to remove a hat emblazoned with the word ‘Impeach’ during a legends match on Tuesday night.

The cap, referring to US president Donald Trump, was against Wimbledon’s strict dress code, as an item of clothing “bearing political statements”.

But Navratilova, who won Wimbledon nine times during an illustrious career, began the match with the hat on.

When the 62-year-old was told to remove it, she said: “Sorry about that, I forgot I had it on, woops!”

Navratilova has been outspoken in her criticism of Trump since his inauguration as president in 2017.

“I think he’s a threat to the world, not just to our country,” said Navratilova – who became a US citizen in 1981 – in a 2017 interview on The Late Late Show. “But you’ve just got to do your part. I’m trying to find out how best to get involved myself – rather than just tweeting, that’s not enough.”

She added: “I think [the American people] just kind of put on the blinkers and said, ‘What would be good for me?’ rather than seeing the big picture.

“For me, personally, great, I’ll get a tax cut, but I don’t want it. I want this country to prosper and I don’t want people tweeting nuclear threats to North Korea – it’s just not a good idea.”
