Live Updates

18:07
Dominic Thiem became the third top-10 player to exit the men's draw in the opening round at Wimbledon when he retired hurt with his opponent, Marcos Baghdatis, leading 6-4, 7-5, 2-0.

The French Open runner-up received a medical timeout for treatment on his back, before the pain eventually became too much early in the third set.

Reaching the final at Roland Garros was a career-best Grand Slam result for the 24-year-old Austrian, but the grind of the clay-court season appeared to have taken its toll.

Sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov lost to Stan Wawrinka on Monday, while 10th-seeded David Goffin lost in straight sets to Australian Matthew Ebden earlier Tuesday.

Baghdatis is into the second round for the ninth time in his career and will next face Spain's David Ferrer or Russian Karen Khachanov.
18:06
Rafael Nadal helped to bring a smile back to the crestfallen face of Spanish sport after making a bright start at Wimbledon.

A 6-3 6-3 6-2 victory over Israel's Dudi Sela, a player with an attractive backhand but lacking the tools to really threaten, was a solid opening to Nadal's campaign.

Hopes that his country had of World Cup glory were shattered by Russia in a gripping penalty shoot-out on Sunday in Moscow.

But Nadal has already given Spain plenty to be proud of this summer with an 11th French Open title last month, and the 32-year-old is aiming to justify his status as the world number one in London.

A decade on from beating Roger Federer in their classic Wimbledon final, Nadal is firmly established as an all-time great, but ambition still burns deep within the left-hander from Majorca.

He is aiming to add to the Wimbledon titles he landed in 2008 and 2010, and determined also to improve a record that shows he has not passed the fourth round since 2011, when he was runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

His game appeared in good working order, despite skipping the grass-court tour events between his Roland Garros triumph and this fortnight.
And after compatriot Garbine Muguruza began the Centre Court action on Tuesday with a successful opening to her title defence, Nadal was satisfied with his own effort in the match that followed.

He said: "It's great to be out here at Wimbledon. I'm happy to be through.

"There's still room to improve but after a while without playing on grass it's very important to start with a straight victory.

"I think I went to the net a couple of times and when I had a chance on my forehand I think I took advantage.

"It's the first round and not easy. It's never easy but especially here on grass without playing a match before."

Game. Set. Match.
Taylor 0-6 4-6 3-6 Bouchard

Despite rallying in the second set, the Briton was unable to capitalise on this upturn in form as she struggled to maintain momentum in the third and final set. A valiant effort from the 20-year-old.
16:13
Nick Kyrgios set a new personal record of 41 aces as he dispatched Denis Istomin in four sets to reach the second round.

The flamboyant Australian star prevailed 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/4) 6-7 (5/7) 6-3, recovering from dropping the third set to storm through in south west London.

The 15th seed had precious few problems moving past Uzbekistan's Istomin, other than his customary lapses in concentration.

16:05
Rafael Nadal is in full control of his match against Duli Sela. He won the first two sets 6-3, 6-3 and will no doubt wrap up the third in similarly emphatic fashion.

Elsewhere, Eugenie Bouchard is serving for the win in her clash with Gabriella Taylor, with the match currently at 0-6 6-5 3-5.
16:01
The full report from Kyle Edmund's first-round win over Alex Bolt.

By Paul Newman at Wimbledon:

15:55
Edmund speaks!

"I'm just really happy to get through the first round of Wimbledon," he said. "There's always that long preparation where there's lots of thinking ahead, excitement, anticipation, you've got the media, all that stuff to do.

"So to get the first round out of the way, play well, I'm very happy with. What a setting to do it, first time playing on Court One in singles. Tricky third set but it shows how well I was playing and thinking to come back and win it 7-5."

Edmund's thoughts now turn to a different sport as he prepares to cheer on England in their World Cup clash with Colombia.

"The support today was great," he said. "I think a lot of people are probably happy that I won in the way I did and everyone can get off and watch the match later tonight.

"I'm positive for the guys. The way they played in the group stages, of course the Belgium match was slightly different, but it's anyone's tournament the way results have been going. All the best for England, hopefully they can do the nation proud."
15:49
The first-round clash between Gabriella Taylor and Eugenie Bouchard has gone to a third and final set. The Canadian came storming out of the blocks to take the first set 6-0 but Taylor recovered, winning the second one 6-4. It's currently 3-1 in the final set, with the Briton hanging on to salvage something from this match.

15:43
Angelique Kerber got her campaign off to the best possible start with a straights-sets win over Vera Zvonareva.

The German, a 2016 finalist and former world number one, beat the Russian 7-5 6-3.

Kerber was a semi-finalist at Eastbourne last week and will be targeting another deep run at the All England Club.

15:28
Madison Keys was the U.S. Open runner-up last year and a French Open semifinalist last month, is considered a contender at Wimbledon right now and, still, total strangers insult her, sometimes with menacing or obscene language, on a regular basis via social media.

"Try to find another job," read one message sent to the American via Twitter after she lost at the Australian Open. Another called her "the most overrated player in all of tennis." Those are just a couple of examples that happen to be suitable for print. Often, as Keys says, "It's really disgusting, horrible things."

A special report from Wimbledon.

15:14
Rafael Nadal is currently on Centre Court against Israel's Dudi Sela, the world No 128. This should be a straightforward affair for the French Open champion - though his lack of practice on the green stuff means it may take a while for him to find his feet in this match.
15:10
Kei Nishikori is into the second round at Wimbledon after beating American qualifier Christian Harrison 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

The 24th-seeded Nishikori saw off Harrison's attempt at a comeback by claiming a tight third set, before cruising to victory in the fourth.

Nishikori, the top-ranked Japanese player at the tournament, will next face another Australian, Bernard Tomic, who made the first-round draw as a lucky loser and took full advantage by defeating Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

15:07
Derby teenager Jay Clarke was narrowly beaten in a five-setter on his Wimbledon debut by experienced Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

The 19-year-old took the first set against the former world number 10, and hauled the match back to 2-2 after losing the second and third.

However, Clarke was left still waiting for a first grand slam event win after Gulbis wrapped up a 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 6-4 victory.

15:05
A Roger Federer Grand Slam record has just been broken on the second day of the 2018 Championships!

Here are the full details:

14:54
Game. Set. Match
Edmund 6-2 6-3 7-5 Bolt

Yep. He's done it. The Australian, positioned on the T, fired what should have been a simple volley into the net to hand the Brit victory. That last set saw the best and worst of Edmund as he dug deep, channelling his trademark resilience, to overcome an initial drop in intensity. A relatively straightforward win in all - and he'll be relieved to have got it sorted in straight sets.

14:51
Edmund 6-2 6-3 6-5 Bolt

Bolt is on serve. If Edmund can break the Australian again, that'll be that.
14:47
Edmund 6-2 6-3 5-5 Bolt

After such a strong start, Britain's Kyle Edmund has found himself on the back foot against Alex Bolt. The Brit was on the verge of losing the third set but held before turning his fortune around to break the Australian's serve.
14:40
Game. Set. Match
Muguruza 5-2 7-5 Broady

The reigning champion avoids any slip-ups and progresses to the second round after beating Broady in straight sets. After a comfortable first set, the Spaniard was made to work for her points in the second as the Briton rallied, notably fighting back from 0-40 down to level it at 4-4. Broady looked far more confident as the game worth and, despite the disappointment of defeat, will no doubt be happy with the performance.

14:03
Bernard Tomic kick-started his 2018 Wimbledon campaign in far happier style than he finished up in London a year ago.

The controversial Australian saw off Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets, 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7/2), making the most of his lucky loser status to move into the second round.

Tomic admitted he was "bored" during his 2017 first round defeat to Mischa Zverev where he was fined £11,600 for feigning injury for a medical timeout purely to disrupt his opponent.

One year on however, and Tomic had a far less turbulent start to his Wimbledon fortnight.
