The Devil Wears Prada 2 has generated enough buzz, box office chatter and fan hype to make a third instalment feel almost inevitable.
After years of fans begging to see our fashion divas walk the halls of Runway once again, the long-awaited sequel is here and fans are flocking to see it in droves, even as critics remain divided on whether it fully captured the magic of the original.
Regardless of the naysayers, does the smash success and fanfare mean we could have a trilogy on our hands? Let’s survey the evidence!

Will there be a The Devil Wears Prada 3?
The good news is that the leading ladies — Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt — have all expressed interest in returning for a third film, but on two conditions: all four stars (that includes Stanley Tucci) must be on board, and the script needs to be of a quality that Miranda Priestley herself would approve!
Speaking to PEOPLE for its latest cover story, the stars hinted they’d be keen to reunite, suggesting that, mixed reviews aside, the appetite for another glossy, cutthroat chapter might still be very real.
When asked what it would take to make a third film happen, Streep responded: “The script.”
“A good script. It’s all about the script,” Blunt agreed.
“And then, everybody has to say yes,” Hathaway added, to which Blunt said: “It’s got to be the core four.” Streep then joked, “They have to be alive.” Ideally, yes!

As for the box office, the highly anticipated sequel has absolutely cleaned up, pulling in a massive USD$233.6 million globally (roughly $350–365 million AUD), according to Comscore.
With an estimated USD$100 million ($150–160 million AUD) production budget, The Devil Wears Prada 2 managed to earn back more than double its cost in its first weekend, effectively covering its budget within its opening stretch and pushing well into profit territory not long after release, even when factoring in its hefty marketing spend. So when you crunch the numbers, a third film definitely feels doable!
Given those numbers, Meryl Streep was right to ask for a mega salary!
Elsewhere in the interview, Hathaway discussed her personal growth from the first film — which dropped in 2006 — until now.
“The thing that struck me was that when we made the first one, I was just a 22-year-old mess,” said Hathaway. “I mean, I’m in such a different phase of my life. I’m really lucky. I found someone that I love so much [husband Adam Shulman]. We’ve been married for 17 years. We’ve got two kids. I just feel like my life is in a much more complete and whole place. I felt so lost when I was 22, which really worked for the character.”
Wonder where everyone will be when/if the third movie arrives? We shall see!
