Wigan Warriors youngster heads out on loan

Wigan Warriors youngster James McDonnell has rejoined York City Knights on a new week-to-week loan deal.

Wigan-born McDonnell, 21, made two appearances for the Knights earlier this season in his previous loan spell, impressing against Widnes Vikings and Oldham RLFC.

The centre or second-rower has worked under Knights head coach James Ford previously within the England Academy set-up, helping England to a series victory over the Australian Schoolboys in 2018.

On the return of McDonnell to York, Ford said: “I’m delighted to be able to bring James back to the club.

“He carries plenty of contact, work ethic and a desire to compete at everything.

“I’ve really enjoyed coaching James previously and jumped at the chance of working with him again.”

McDonnell said he was delighted to return to the Championship outfit, saying: “It’s great to be back with York.

“I feel like my first loan spell was cut too short, I’m hoping I can get some more game time and help York on their way to achieving what they want from this year.”

The Wigan loanee is available for Sunday’s match against Widnes Vikings at the LNER Community Stadium.
