Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed to death at a house in Wigan.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at the home in Platt Street, Leigh, at 11.45pm on Saturday.

“When police attended, they discovered an unresponsive man in his 30s who had suffered a stab wound to his stomach,” a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency service workers, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

Two men, aged 48 and 44, and a 22-year-old woman were arrested and taken into police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wilkinson said: “Three people will remain in custody while my team questions them about their involvement and the circumstances surround this man’s death.

“Local residents will expect to see a continued police presence as the crime scene will remain in place at the property while we gather vital evidence and continue with forensic work.

“While enquiries continue, this man and his family will stay at the forefront of officers’ minds and we will continue to offer our support to those closest to him.”

A separate murder probe was launched in Sunderland after an 18-year-old man who was assaulted outside a pub died in hospital.

Northumbria Police said one man had been arrested in connection with the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning, and remains in police custody.

It came after a teenager was stabbed to death in London on Friday night, and another man was murdered outside a youth club in the capital on Thursday.

Fatal stabbings hit a record high across England and Wales in the year to March 2018, when 285 people were knifed to death.

Police have called for increased funding to tackle rising violent crime, while critics have blamed government budget cuts to youth services and preventative work.

Anyone with any information on the death in Wigan is asked to call police on 0161 856 9908 quoting incident number 2753 of 23 February 2019, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
