Wigan Hospital A&E 'extremely busy' as bosses urge anyone with minor issues not to come

Doctors at Wigan Hospital have urged people with 'minor issues' to stay away amid rising pressure on A&E.

It is the second time in two weeks that health officials in the borough have pleaded with the public to avoid the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary if possible.

They say emergency services are currently 'extremely busy' and have asked for only those with emergencies or life-threatening conditions to attend.

In a statement released on social media, Dr Muhammad Saleem Nasir, A&E consultant at the hospital, made a public plea.

"We are currently experiencing a high demand on our emergency services, with some patients attending the A&E department with minor issues, which could be dealt with at one of our other great NHS services across the borough," he said.

"Both myself and my wonderful colleagues in A&E are here to treat the patients with serious incidents and life threatening emergencies - those who need our urgent care the most.

"We are doing everything we can to care for those unwell people to make sure they get the help they need, as soon as they need it and as safely as possible. But we do need your help.

"Please help us care for them in the time of their need, by choosing the right NHS service.

"If you're unsure, think 111 first. They will help you get to the right care and even book you into our Emergency Department or to see a GP if necessary."

Officials at the Bolton Royal Hospital have also called on the public for help within the last few weeks.

They have cited an increase in Covid-19 patients as a factor which has added pressure onto an already busy A&E service.
