Why you should never leave hand sanitiser in your car, according to experts

Properly washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the best way to make sure your hands are clean, especially during the coronavirus crisis.

However, when this isn't possible, for example when you're on the go, it's important to have hand sanitiser available.

An easy place to store hand sanitiser is in the car, especially when making essential journeys, such as to the supermarket.

You might want to think twice about this though, as experts have warned storing hand sanitiser in the car can affect its efficiency, reports RSVP Live.

Many people leave bottles of sanitiser in their cars for days or weeks at a time so they don't forget them when they leave the house, but FGCU Associate Professor Dr Greg Boyce told Drivetribe that this is not a good idea.

With the weather getting warmer, rising temperatures can cause the alcohol in the sanitiser to evaporate.

As alcohol is the active ingredient that's killing bacteria and viruses, the product won't be able to provide the level of protection it's supposed to.

The site Love to Know also explains that hand sanitiser can be a fire hazard and should be stored away from all heat sources.

They explain: "Most hand sanitiser products contain a high volume of alcohol, which is the reason for hand sanitizer fire hazard concerns.

"Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are classified as Class I Flammable Liquid substances, which means they have a flash point of less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be stored away from all heat and ignition sources, including (but not limited to) sparks; open flames; any types of electrical outlets, switches or equipment; and extreme heat."
