Why These 9 Foods Are Always in Short Supply for July 4th

The Fourth of July is the biggest grilling holiday of the year. This creates a massive and highly predictable surge in demand for a very specific set of cookout foods. While grocery stores do their best to prepare, they often underestimate the demand. This leads to the inevitable and frustrating shortages of these nine key items in the days leading up to the holiday. The empty shelves are a direct result of the entire country trying to buy the same things at the same time.

1. Hot Dog and Hamburger Buns

The bread aisle is always the first casualty of the July 4th rush. The demand for hot dog and hamburger buns is so enormous that the bakeries and distributors simply cannot keep up. No matter how many store orders, the shelves will be a scene of devastation by the day before the holiday. The buns are a classic bottleneck in the system.

2. Ketchup and Mustard

These are the two most essential condiments for any American cookout. Because they are shelf-stable, many people forget to check their supply until the last minute. This leads to a huge wave of shoppers all buying ketchup and mustard at the same time. This can easily lead to a temporary shortage of the most popular, family-size brands.

3. Corn on the Cob

Corn on the cob is the quintessential summer side dish. The holiday weekend is often the peak of the local corn season. This creates a massive demand for fresh corn. The big, open bins of corn in the produce section will be empty by the end of the day on July 3rd.

4. Charcoal and Propane Tanks

The first big grilling holiday of the summer means that everyone is buying fuel for their barbecue. Bags of charcoal and the exchangeable propane tanks for gas grills are in extremely high demand. The stores only have a limited amount of space to store these bulky items. This means that they will sell out very quickly.

5. Patriotic Desserts

The in-store bakery will produce a huge number of festive, red, white, and blue desserts. This includes things like flag cakes and berry pies. These items are very popular and are a major holiday tradition. However, the bakery can only produce so many of these special items each day, so they will always sell out fast.

6. Potato and Macaroni Salad

The pre-made potato and macaroni salads from the deli are another high-demand convenience item. They are a classic side dish for any barbecue. The deli can only make a limited amount of these salads each day. The refrigerated case where they are kept is often empty by the afternoon before the holiday.

7. Watermelon

A big, fresh watermelon is another iconic symbol of a summer cookout. The large, cardboard bins of watermelons that are placed at the front of the store will be a scene of chaos. Shoppers will pick them over very quickly. Finding a good, ripe watermelon at the last minute can be a major challenge.

8. Sliced Cheese

Every one of those hamburgers needs a slice of cheese. This leads to a massive run on the dairy aisle. Packages of pre-sliced American and cheddar cheese will sell out very quickly. This is another staple item whose demand is simply overwhelming for the stores to keep up with.

9. Bagged Ice

This is the one item that is guaranteed to be in short supply. The demand for bagged ice to fill up the coolers for a hot, July afternoon is always far greater than the supply. The ice chests at the front of every single grocery store and gas station in town will be completely sold out by noon on the Fourth of July.

The Cookout Crunch

The annual shortages of these key July 4th staples are a predictable part of our shared holiday tradition. They are the direct result of a massive, nationwide celebration. The only way to avoid the frustration of an empty shelf is to plan ahead. You should do your holiday grocery shopping at least a few days in advance. This will allow you to get everything you need for a fun and stress-free cookout.
