Fifteen years ago, the modern blockbuster changed forever as Christopher Nolan’s seismic superhero/crime epic The Dark Knight hit theaters.
The film opened July 18, 2008, making a billion dollars globally and winning Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for the late Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker.
The Dark Knight was a tonal game changer for the way that studios approached intellectual property, kicking off a darker, more grounded take on comic book stories and beloved franchises alike.
Whether it’s the monumental truck flip or the Batman/Joker interrogation scene, Ledger’s clown prince said it best. This movie changed things.
It’s become one of the most celebrated and revered studio films of the 21st century, and the film’s many fans wished it a happy 15th anniversary on Tuesday.
I’ve seen a lot of movies, but I’ve only ever flown out of state once to see a movie. Happy 15th Anniversary, The Dark Knight. pic.twitter.com/o24UKngrc7

The Dark Knight was released OTD in 2008.
When Heath Ledger was cast as Joker, the backlash was savage. While they were complaining Ledger was busy turning in a powerhouse performance. He has just 30 minutes screen time in the movie, what he does in that time is incredible. pic.twitter.com/C76HUrgbeQ— The Sting (@TSting18) July 18, 2023

I’ve always felt Aaron Eckhart should’ve become a much bigger deal after The Dark Knight. He really is exceptional in it. Personally, I would’ve put him up for Best Supporting actor as well. pic.twitter.com/KZ3YgKS80u

Back when teasers premiered in front of theatrical releases instead of online. The Dark Knight teaser was attached before The Simpsons Movie, which I wanted to see anyway, but this had me in my seat early. I miss this style of marketing. pic.twitter.com/gUlZZM8HIt

15 years ago today, The Dark Knight debuted in theaters. I was floored by it the first time I saw it, and it has remained my personal favorite movie of all-time ever since. I still re-watch it at least once a year.
So glad Heath Ledger won the Oscar for this. He deserved it. pic.twitter.com/AoRkcvh0Uk
