Why Sergio Romero has not returned to Manchester United amid David de Gea and Dean Henderson duel

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will decide on Manchester United's goalkeeper to start the season after their final training session on Friday.

Dean Henderson signed a new five-year contract with United last month and is staying with the club rather than heading out on loan for a fourth full season running.

Henderson, 23, is vying with David de Gea for the number one spot amid intense scrutiny over the Spaniard's role after a poor 18 months for his club. De Gea, 29, inked a four-year deal with United last year and excelled on international duty for Spain earlier this month.

De Gea was absent for last week's friendly defeat at Aston Villa, where Henderson made his maiden appearance for the United first-team, and third-choice 'keeper Sergio Romero is the only United player yet to return to training.

"I can't, I'm not going to tell you the team today, no I'm not," Solskjaer replied when asked who his starting 'keeper would be. "But the training, goalkeeper training, has been fantastic to watch, so enjoyable. It's the highest possible quality you can imagine.

"I know the goalkeeping coaches are really enjoying working with them and watching when going into the games, some of the stuff they do. Some of the stuff is fantastic.

"It's gonna be an interesting, interesting thing for many to follow. It's great to see [Spain coach] Luis Enrique talk about David the way he did after his internationals. Coaches who work with players, they've got the respect and he shows his respect when he talks about it'll be nice if the press suddenly wrote what a great goalkeeper we have. And it'd be great if you, the press, wrote good things about them two and they're working well together at the moment.

"Sergio hasn't come back yet, he was given some extra time with his family, [so] write about not just problems between the two of them but they've worked really well together."
