Why police were called to the Tyne Tunnel on Sunday morning

Police patrols were spotted at the Tyne Tunnel on Sunday.

Officers from Northumbria Police were seen having stopped a 4x4 vehicle at the approach to the tunnel southbound.

A video recorded by a passenger in a car driving past the incident on Sunday morning showed two police cars behind a halted 4x4.

Officers also appeared to be speaking to someone at the scene, which the force confirmed was for a minor offence.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At 9:44am a vehicle was uplifted north of the Tyne Tunnel due to a traffic offence ."

It is not currently known whether anyone has been arrested at the scene.

On Sunday police said they were unable to reveal the nature of the offence.
