Police responded to a call from the public over the bag near the junction of Observatory Road and B3129 Gloucester Row at around 3.45pm on Tuesday (August 18).
An area around the bag was cordoned off for investigation.
As a result, traffic was slow around the B3129 Gloucester Row and around Observatory Road and Clifton Suspension Bridge.
A spokesperson for the police confirmed they were called to concerns that there was a suspicious backpack in the area, but it turned out that the bag posed no risk to the public.

The spokesperson said: “We responded to a call from a member of the public at about 3.45pm on Tuesday 18 August concerning an abandoned back pack close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which the caller believed could be suspicious.
"Police attended and established that the bag did not pose a risk to the public. It was later returned to the owner.”
