Why Michael Carrick dragged Paul Pogba down the tunnel after Manchester United win

Paul Pogba was ushered down the London Stadium tunnel by Michael Carrick on Sunday afternoon amid abuse directed at him by irate West Ham supporters.

The French midfielder was targeted by home fans as he made his way towards the changing room following Manchester United's dramatic 2-1 win in the capital.

A clip shared on social media showed a minority of West Ham fans hurling abuse at Pogba as he made his way down the tunnel, before the United midfielder stopped to laugh at those taunting him.

Pogba, 28, appeared to see the funny side of the situation as he simply stood and smiled at the aggrieved home supporters before first-team coach Carrick intervened and pushed him down the tunnel.

One theory behind the abuse was that West Ham supporters had not forgiven Pogba for his heated clash with club hero Mark Noble when the two sides met back in 2018, although there is no excuse for spewing such personal taunts.

The France international certainly had the last laugh though as he left London victorious thanks to a dramatic finale which saw Jesse Lingard net a late winner before David de Gea denied Noble from the penalty spot.

United had dominated large parts of the match but seemed destined for just a point amid a flurry of wasted chances and controversial penalty decisions against them.

The win leaves United in the Premier League, level on points with Liverpool and Chelsea but just behind them on goal difference.
