Ever since Megan Thee Stallion shared a ~savage~ Instagram Story claiming that her ex-beau of less than a year, Klay Thompson, had cheated on her, everyone on the internet has quickly rallied behind her — with some even threatening to call on the wrath of the Etsy Witches to orchestrate his demise.
While she does have a bustling fanbase of Hotties, here’s why I reckon the NBA star’s alleged betrayal hits harder than any other scandal.
The Hottie before Klay
Before her relationship with Klay, it’s without a doubt that Megan Thee Stallion was for the girls. She had ‘normal people’ interests, like anime and superheroes, she’s funny, and let’s not get started on her iconic Halloween costumes.
But what I loved most about Megan before Klay was that her music was extremely empowering. It was what you needed when you were having a terrible day, or if you just needed that extra confidence boost.
Every time I would play “Girls in the Hood”, I like to imagine Megan in my ear being my personal hype girl.
Tying this up into the awful dating pool — with the Institute of Family Studies reporting a “dating recession” — Megan’s words, combined with her hot beats, reminded I am THAT girl.
But alongside her hype girl abilities, the star has quite a devastating past. Both of her parents are deceased, she has no immediate family, she was shot by fellow rapper Tory Lanez in July 2020, and throughout the trial, she was subjected to online trolling and scrutiny.
He was found guilty of the shooting and was sentenced to ten years in prison back in 2022.
Megan’s wifey era, the rise of yearnalism and hope
Amidst their whirlwind relationship, Megan changed, as everyone does when they get into a relationship.
Y’all ever have that one friend who kinda dips out of a friendship after they get cuffed up in a relationship? I’d like to imagine Megan was that gal for all the hot girls out there.
But, with the rapper also being a role model and influence on society, many looked towards her relationship with Klay as the ‘objective’ when it comes to romantic connections. Especially with the lovey-dovey content she was dishing (like the Thanksgiving vlog).
A major example of this was her 2025 track (which also dropped around the same time as Joseph’s Vogue article) “LOVER GIRL”.
In comparison to her other tracks — think something like “Thot Sh*t” or “B-I-T-C-H” — “LOVER GIRL” was a straight-up switch-up.
From lyrics like, “I had to lock in when I found out he could handle me” to “I turned his house into a home… I’m the type of fine make a n**** run to that altar”, you could tell Megan was head over heels for Klay.
In a now-deleted video documenting the behind-the-scenes of her “LOVER GIRL” shoot, Megan confirmed the song was about the NBA player.
“So today I’m shooting my man, my man, my man, my baby. This is my song about Klay [Thompson],” she said.
As an observer, member of the public if you will, if you had a song written about you by a Grammy-winner, you’d think that their relationship was rock solid, and if it were to end, it would’ve ended amicably and with respect.
But according to Megan, that wasn’t the case.
Hitting a bruise
I think a lot of people have been burned by some kind of betrayal, like cheating and affairs, which is why Megan’s story hits so hard, especially because she loved so loudly.
According to Sexual Health of Australia, cheating is bloody common, with estimates indicating that 60 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women are willing to report that an affair has occurred while being married. Its report also suggests 70 per cent of all marriages will endure an affair.
We want the best, and we only expect the best from our lovers. Those who’ve seen out most intimate sides. But when they go behind our backs and ruin it, it f*cking hurts.
As an optimist who, unfortunately, has experienced the absolute woes of cheating, the thought of one of Hollywood’s most chic, most lovable, most joyous, and most beautiful celebrities being cheated on kinda steals that hope of romantic connections.
When Megan first made public claims about the cheating, many fans rushed to X (formerly Twitter) with confusion more than anger.
To make things worse, it’s incredibly clear how hurt Megan is. Hours after making her scathing post, the rapper was spotted crying during the Moulin Rouge! The Musical curtain call.
She has since announced that she will be exiting the production earlier than expected.
No one likes to see their faves hurt, and I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest Hottie in the world. But seeing someone be so in love and have it ripped away because of alleged temptation is a pain I know all too well, and that’s why I think this hits harder than any other scandal.
It was unexpected. It happened quickly, and the hurt wasn’t necessary.
