Authorities in Michigan have identified a man they say fatally shot his wife and six children on Friday in a mass murder that fits the definition of a family annihilation.

Citing autopsy results, the Ottawa county sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday that Kristopher Karolkiewicz; his wife, Amanda; and their six children, age five to 15, all died of gunshot wounds before their bodies were found in their burning home in Grand Haven Township. The agency noted that Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot himself to death. And they said that the fire at the home on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan was evidently set intentionally in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though officials were still investigating the blaze’s point of origin.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” the sheriff, Eric DeBoer, said in a statement read aloud at a news conference by deputy captain Jacob Sparks.

Friday’s killings in Grand Haven were at least the 13th mass murder reported in the US so far in 2026, according to the non-partisan Gun Violence Archive. At least eight of those fit the definition of what since the 1980s has been known as a family annihilation, a type of crime most commonly committed by an armed male on multiple close family members.

US communities have historically perceived family annihilations as isolated tragedies. But a July 2023 Indianapolis Star investigation found they were occurring across the US every five days on average, raising questions about why the country has not sought a nationwide strategy to dissuade that particular type of crime.

Additionally, the violence in Grand Haven was one of more than 270 mass shootings reported across the US this year as of Tuesday morning, records maintained by the Gun Violence Archive show. Mass shootings are defined as cases in which four or more victims are shot whether fatally or non-fatally.

The US’s perennially high numbers of mass shootings have prompted calls from lawmakers and advocates for more substantial federal gun control. But Congress has not implemented such restrictions.

Authorities in Grand Haven had earlier said they were not looking for any suspects from outside the Karolkiewicz home after discovering the massacre. The names of the children slain had not been released as of Tuesday.

“The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks added. “The case remains open and under investigation to try to get to the bottom and get answers of what happened leading up to the incident.”

Officials had investigated a smoky smell near the Karolkiewicz home on Friday morning, but found nothing. Three hours later, after further reports, they returned to find smoke coming from the home and entered to find the bodies. The family’s dogs and at least one cat had also died in the blaze.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, was a vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 to earlier in July, when his employment ended, the organization said in a statement.

The association did not release further details, saying it does not comment on personnel matters. While with the AHA, he worked remotely for a division responsible for CPR and first aid training and products, it said.

Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, was described in news reports as an elementary school substitute teacher who went by Mandy. She “was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students”, her mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, said in a statement.

“We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately address our devastation,” they wrote, adding that they “pray for God’s peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives”.

The couple met at work at a beverage company in 2008 and began dating that summer, according to a parenting-oriented blog that Mandy Karolkiewicz kept over a decade ago. The two married in August 2009.

The children’s mother wrote in the blog that when their first child was born in April 2011, it was “the best day of my life (so far)”. Two more sons followed over the next four years and the couple later adopted two daughters and had another biological son.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz described himself as “a very lucky guy” in a 2019 Facebook post.

Studies have previously shown that times of financial stress had preceded some family annihilations.

A 2010 report by the office of justice programs found that “unemployment was a significant risk factor for murder-suicide but only when combined with a history of domestic violence.”

“In other words,” the report said, “it was not a risk factor in and of itself but was something that tipped the scale following previous abuse.”
