Why Matthijs de Ligt's transfer to Barcelona is on hold - offering Man Utd hope

Barcelona have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt - because agent Mino Raiola has concerns about the commission he would receive.

De Ligt has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, with the centre-back set to spark a mass scramble for his signature this summer.

Barcelona are the club leading that chase, while Manchester United are desperate to sign the Ajax captain and Juventus are also keen.

Spanish daily Marca claim that Barca and Ajax have already verbally agreed a £60million deal this summer, and the Dutch club are keen to close out the deal quickly so they can reinvest in their squad.

However Raiola has demanded that he receives a 20 per cent cut of any deal, which would see him earn a whopping £12m.

Ajax understandably have reservations over this commission, while Raiola is holding out for another club offering a larger transfer fee so he can increase the amount he receives.

Both clubs are confident that this hold up will not prevent the deal from going through but, nevertheless, this will put United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on red alert.

De Ligt is wanted by every top European club, following Ajax's impressive route to the Champions League semi-finals.

The move then suffered a second setback on Friday night after Raiola was slapped with a ban from dealing with transfers anywhere in the world.

Raiola had previously been handed a three-month ban from working within Italy, but the chairman of FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has extended the ban across the globe.

Details over who will look after De Ligt’s transfer dealings during Raiola’s ban, which will run until August 9, is yet to be announced.
