Why Manchester United's Daniel James was not in Wales squad for final friendly before Euro 2020

Daniel James will be part of Wales' travelling squad to Azerbaijan for their opening Euro 2020 despite missing their final friendly on Saturday.

James was absent completely from the Wales squad who drew 0-0 with Albania at the Cardiff City Stadium despite starting the previous friendly defeat to France last week. Wales manager Rob Page revealed James was feeling unwell.

The Manchester United winger is a key member of the Wales team who face Switzerland, Turkey and Italy at Euro 2020, so losing James for any period of time would be a blow.

Without him, Wales huffed and puffed to a stalemate, and they now fly out to Baku where they face Switzerland in their Euros opener next weekend. And stand-in Wales boss Page has spoken about James' absence, confirming he will be back in training on Monday.

"DJ has not been too well the last couple of days," he said, playing down any longer-term effects.

"He's just had a sickness bug. he's back in training [on Sunday]. Joe Morrell picked up a knock, it was a kick. It was more bone bruising than ligaments. They're both on the grass [on Sunday] and they'll all be on the plane."

United youngster Dylan Levitt played the full 90 minutes for Wales, and will hope to have forced his way into Page's thinking for the tournament.
