The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) kicked off with a bang this year after Lady Gaga was crowned Artist of the Year right off the bat. But just minutes after accepting her award, the Mayhem singer had to leave the event.
Our collective mother was the first winner of the evening, announced just 15 minutes after the prestigious awards night began. She took to the stage in a show-stopping ruffled Marc Jacobs ensemble to raucous applause from the crowd.
However, after accepting the shiny silver spaceman trophy, she revealed to the crowd that she had to hit the road.
“I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden,” the “Pokerface” singer explained.

You see, Miss Gaga is a busy lady and she’d been double-booked.
Despite winning one of the most prestigious awards at the VMAs, she also had a concert for her Mayhem Ball tour at Madison Square Garden locked in for the exact same time. So, she fronted up to accept the very first award before travelling 30km across the city to make it to her gig in time.
After her name was announced, Gaga gave a heartfelt speech to the fellow musicians in the room.
“Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world,” she said.
“Being an artist is a discipline, a craft meant for reaching into someone’s heart, where it grows its roots, and reminding them to dream. Being an artist is a responsibility to make the audience smile, dance, cry, release at any turn. It is a method of building understanding and celebrating community.”
She then dedicated the award to her fiancé, Michael Polansky, whom she collaborated with on her latest album.
“To my partner in all things, Michael, creating this year with you was a beautiful, beautiful dream, and you have been my partner every step of the way. I dedicate this to you, my love,” she said.

While Lady Gaga is heading off to her own gig, the broadcast will show a pre-recorded performance taken at a previous Madison Square Garden show during her tour.
According to TV Insider, the Wednesday star is expected to perform her smash hits “Abracadabra” and “The Dead Dance”.
