Why John Stones is not in Man City squad vs Leicester as Eric Garcia starts

John Stones misses his second Manchester City game of the week after not being deemed fit enough for the matchday squad against Leicester City.

The English defender started alongside Nathan Ake on Monday night against Wolves as Pep Guardiola's side got their season off to an excellent start with a 3-1 win at Molineux.

However, he was not involved in the Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth in midweek and was again absent for Sunday's Premier League game against the Foxes.

Stones is expected to stay at the club in the transfer window but his latest fitness issues mean he is no closer to convincing Guardiola he can be relied upon to play three games every week - something demanded of the top central defenders. The former Everton centre-back will move further down the pecking order if City complete a deal for a centre-back with Ruben Dias expected to sign from Benfica.

Meanwhile, Eric Garcia starts his first league game of the season with Aymeric Laporte only deemed fit enough for the bench. Garcia is wanted by Barcelona, but the Catalan club may not have the funds to move for him in this transfer window. City want a total package of around £27m for a player whose contract runs out next summer.

City have wanted a centre-back since Vincent Kompany left last summer and did not view Ake as a sufficient replacement this summer, having missed out on a player in the previous season and suffered on the pitch as they surrendered their title to Liverpool.
