Why it is important bikers have proper gear, police share graphic images

Police have shared graphic images of the damage a man did to himself - and his helmet - after crashing into a car while not wearing proper safety gear.

The pictures have been shared by Derbyshire Road Policing Unit after a crash on the A38.

The motorbike crashed into the back of a car which had slowed down as traffic ahead came to a halt.

Police say that other than the helmet, the rider was wearing no safety gear at all.

The images show the rider's legs badly grazed - while the images show him wearing shorts and trainers instead of protective trousers and boots.

The rider's hand is also injured - while his coat has been left torn by the crash.

The helmet itself is badly damaged showing marks of having been scraped along the ground with some force.

Police tweeted: "We know it's graphic. Our intention is to show the need for proper gear. Other than helmet, no safety gear at all."

Police described the rider's injuries as 'minor'
