Why is Woody Allen doing an interview?

Woody Allen has made 50 movies despite being accused of sexual assault in the 90s. The alleged assault was from Allen’s ex, Mia Farrow, an she alleged that Allen sexually assaulted their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. In recent years, Farrow’s story has become more prominent and many who once worked with the director have shared their remorse over doing so.

So it then begs the question: Why is he now doing an interview? And one with Bari Weiss, no less. The answer is that Allen wrote a book. One I won’t be reading but it is called What’s With Baum? and it is about “Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish writer with a secret that could unravel his life.” But, as Weiss wrote, it explores accusations, the truth, and you can guess where this is going.

We’ve already written about how Allen, who was accused of sexual assault, is planning on voting for Andrew Cuomo, who was accused of sexual assault, in the upcoming New York mayoral election. But in his nonsense discussion with Weiss, Allen shared his view on cancel culture. Sir, we really did not need your opinion on this.

“If an actor says, ‘I won’t work with him,’ basically, the actor is thinking, ‘I’m doing a good thing,’ from his point of view, ‘I’m making a contribution, I’m making a statement. ’But he’s really making a mistake. Some day he may learn that… I would think [actors boycotting me] would have more common sense, when they read about the situation. What surprises me, always, is how ready and willing people are to embrace it. I would think someone reading the details would think, ‘That’s a little dicey looking to me,’” Allen said.

He’s referring to actors who will not work with him because he was accused of sexually assaulting a 7 year-old.

We don’t need to continue to come back to Woody Allen

Allen can have what he deems as his “truth” and that’s fine but that doesn’t mean that anyone has to support him. So his comments about actors boycotting him come across as petty and childish. Everyone has the right to believe what they want and I choose, in this moment, to believe Dylan Farrow. So if that means boycotting Allen then I am all the better for it.

But the idea that Allen, who wrote an entire movie about a 42 year-old dating a 17 year-old with Manhattan, is angry that people don’t want to work with him is hilarious. Okay? You are almost 90 years old. Retire. We don’t need your worldview in movies anymore.

The idea that Allen thinks we should all commit to this idea that the story seems “dicey” to him when he then turned around and married his other adopted daughter. Soon-Yi was 27 when the two got married when Allen was 62 years old.

There is a world where Allen just never did an interview again and that is the world I wish I lived in but whatever, add “giving Woody Allen a platform” as another reason why Bari Weiss is the worse.
