Why the A1 was closed north of Morpeth between Alnwick and Epsey today

The A1 between the A1068 at Alnwick and the A897 at Epsley was closed on Thursday, March 10 for more than six hours after a serious crash.

Emergency services closed the road at around 8.40am and it didn't reopen until around 3.20pm.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash before 9am and three people were taken to hospital.

Why was the A1 closed north of Morpeth?

The A1 was closed while accident investigation work was carried out by Police and firefighters after the crash earlier on Thursday March 10.

Three people were taken to hospital after the crash. One patient was airlifted to the RVI while the other two were taken to the same hospital by a road ambulance.

Northumbria Police closed the road to carry out a collision investigation after the two vehicle crash. The force is now appealing for motorists who were in the area at the time to come forward.

Sgt Dave Roberts of the Force’s Motor Patrols Department said: “An investigation has been launched and we are committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“I am now appealing to anybody who was in the area around that time to come forward with any information or dashcam footage, as it may prove crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the collision."

Where was the A1 closed?

The A1 was closed in both directions north of Morpeth near Causey Park, between the Longhorsley Turn Off and Earsdon Turn Off. Diversions were in place from Heighley Gate turnoff to the junction for Widdrington/Chevington to get around the road closure
