Why is Greggs closed? IT issue affecting payments

Chaos has hit Greggs due to an issue accepting payments which has forced them to close.

The bakery chain had to close many of its branches, or switch to cash only payments.

Other shops have experienced similar issues in recent days.

Why has Greggs closed?

Greggs is experiencing technical issues that are affecting payments in store.

A statement from Greggs said: “We are currently experiencing issues accepting payments in our shops." It added: "We are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

Customers took to X to share their disappointment. “Greggs has fallen,” one user tweeted.

Which shops have experienced IT issues?

Sainsbury's was also affected by “technical issues” on Saturday morning, though they are now resolved. The supermarket said on Saturday morning that it could not fulfil the “vast majority” of online deliveries, while staff waited outside some stores to let customers know that they could only pay with cash.

On Saturday afternoon, Sainsbury's confirmed issues had been resolved.

Tesco had also experienced issues, meaning it “had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery”.

The supermarket apologised to customers, and later confirmed the issue had largely been resolved, though orders for later in the day were still affected.

Another X user said, in reference to the supermarket issues: “Ok, so some of the IT issues were fun, but Greggs, Greggs, it's just a step too far.”
