Why Harry is holding the baby instead of Meghan in break from royal tradition

The first photocall for Prince Harry and Meghan's baby saw yet another tradition being broken.

The couple have not confirmed to normal Royal traditions since Royal baby first pictures as Meghan and Prince Harry's son makes public debut

And it hasn't changed after their baby son's birth.

Harry held the baby throughout their son's first photocall, as his wife looked on.

Usually, it is the mother seen holding the baby on the steps of the hospital just hours after the birth.

With a break from the norm, the couple said they wanted to celebrate their son, who has not been named, as a family in private before presenting him to the world.

Rather than a photocall on the steps of the hospital, with the world's media looking for an exclusive, the pair waited two days and held a private photocall with only a handful of photographers.

The protective mum and dad have been wanting to keep details of their child's labour private, so much so that the baby's birth bulletin missed off the doctor's signatures and any detail of where the baby was delivered.

Those details are normally included on the easel that is displayed at Buckingham Palace.

Amid surroundings steeped in royal history, the latest royal baby made his debut behind closed doors, with a small press pool of only one reporter, one photographer, three cameramen, as well as the couple's own private photographer and a household press officer photographer.

The room had a special connection for the couple because it is where their wedding reception was held nearly a year ago.

His aunt and uncle, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who had all their children at the Lido wing presented their three children - Louis, Charlotte and George - on the steps of the hospital.

And Prince Harry's mum, Diana, held him and his brother on the hospital steps.

Although with William, Charles did carry him out of the hospital before handing the baby to his wife.

It was picked up on social media with Florida Today saying: "In another break with tradition, new dad Prince Harry was the one holding the newborn as the couple introduced Baby Sussex to the world."

Another said: "I knew Harry would be the one holding the baby during the photocall."

But Harry is not the first royal dad to hold his baby, Prince Edward held both of his children - Louise and James - when they were born.
