Why Germany’s extra-time goal against Paraguay in the World Cup was disallowed

  • Jonathan Tah's headed goal for Germany against Paraguay in their World Cup last-32 tie was controversially ruled out by VAR .
  • With the score at 1-1, the defender rose highest to head home after a corner shortly before the extra time interval.
  • However, after the celebrations, the players were informed the goal was being checked by VAR, which in turn advised Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed to go to the monitor to check.
  • After a review, defender Waldemar Anton was adjudged to have blocked goalkeeper Orlando Gill from challenging for the ball.
  • BBC ’s referee analyst Darren Cann appeared to disagree with the decision, saying there was “hardly anything” in the incident, while co-commentator Alan Shearer said the goal should have stood.
