Why every Auburn player has No. 7 on their helmet in the Outback Bowl

The Auburn Tigers will take the field at Raymond James Stadium on New Year’s Day wearing special helmets that pay tribute to Auburn legend and Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan.

Sullivan, a quarterback for the Tigers from 1968 to 1971 became the first Auburn player to ever win the Heisman Trophy in 1971 after passing for 2,012 yards and 20 touchdowns in his senior season. After a short NFL career, Sullivan returned to Auburn, where he served as an assistant coach for several years before moving on to become a head coach at TCU. Sullivan died in December at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer.

To honor Sullivan, every Auburn player will wear his No. 7 on one side of their helmet.

Auburn revealed the uniforms for the Outback Bowl in a moving video.
