Why Erling Haaland is unlikely to be next Man City captain

  • Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that striker Erling Haaland is unlikely to be appointed as the team's new captain following Bernardo Silva's departure at the end of last season.
  • Maresca explained that his tactical rule requires the captain to visit the touchline for tactical instructions after every goal, which would be impractical given Haaland's frequent goalscoring and desire to celebrate.
  • The City manager confirmed that the squad currently has three or four leaders in place, though key midfielder Rodri is currently recovering from back surgery amid transfer speculation linking him with Barcelona.
  • England Under-21 striker Divin Mubama has completed a loan move to Southampton after impressing during City's pre-season tour of Asia and scoring five goals in 28 appearances for Stoke last term.
  • Manchester City are set to face Premier League champions Arsenal in the Community Shield in Cardiff this Sunday before kicking off their Premier League campaign at home to Bournemouth on 23 August.
