Why did the May Bank Holiday change for 2020? Reason it's a Friday this year

The first May Bank Holiday usually takes place on the first Monday of the month.

But in 2020, it was been pushed back four days and is taking place today, on Friday 8 May, instead.

It has been moved to coincide with VE Day, as 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe.

Bank Holiday Friday was supposed to be the start of a weekend of celebrations and commemorations, but sadly many events have been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

On 8 May 1945, the Allied Forces accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and the war in Europe came to an end.

Adolf Hitler had committed suicide a week earlier, on 30 April, leaving his successor Karl Donitz to surrender to the Allies.

Winston Churchill announced Germany's defeat with a speech broadcast from Downing Street on 8 May. He later said: "My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It's a victory of the great British nation as a whole."

More than one million people took to the streets of Britain on VE Day to celebrate the end of the fighting.

King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth waved from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, while the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed to wander incognito through the crowds, and take part in the jubilation.

Outside of Europe, the Second World War ended when an armistice was signed with Japan on 14 August 1945. They formally surrendered on 2 September.

The second May Bank Holiday in 2020 will take place on a Monday (25 May) as normal.
