Why Denmark has issued a wolf warning to holidaymakers

• Flyers distributed by Varde municipality and Visit Vesterhavet advise tourists to “show dominance” and “keep eye contact”.
• The advice includes defending yourself by hitting, kicking and using objects, particularly targeting the wolf's hindquarters if it attacks a person or dog.
• The Danish Centre for Environment and Energy noted that “at least one young wolf is exhibiting significantly reduced shyness and approach behaviour towards humans”.
• Wolves are repopulating Denmark after a 200-year absence, with 49 recorded this year, according to the Natural History Museum of Aarhus, and their EU protection status was recently downgraded to allow for population management.
