Why Bernardo Silva is not playing for Man City vs Tottenham in the Champions League

Bernardo Silva was ruled out of Manchester City's Champions League quarter-final first leg after picking up a thigh strain in training.

The Blues midfielder was joined on the sidelines for City's trip to north London by Benjamin Mendy, who was not deemed to be fit to play twice in three days after his injury problems this season.

Mendy, 24, has been ruled out off 33 City games this season with foot and knee problems after missing 43 games in the last campaign with a cruciate knee injury.

The left-back returned for his first appearance since January in the FA Cup semi-final win against Brighton on Saturday, with Bernardo playing 90 minutes on the flank.

The duo's absence from the City side to play against Spurs was the headline from a much-changed starting XI that included Fabian Delph at left-back, with the England international making his first start since the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Burton in January.

Kevin De Bruyne, who impressed against Cardiff and Brighton, was named on the bench with Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva completing City's midfield trio with Fernandinho. Sergio Aguero, who picked up an ankle injury at Fulham 10 days ago, return to lead the line in place of Gabriel Jesus.

Prior to kick-off Guardiola told BT Sport: "Bernardo is injured and Kevin de Bruyne could play, but I decided on David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan in that position. Tottenham's physicality is incredible so we will use him when we need."
