Why Belfast was released in US cinemas first

Belfast is set to land at cinemas across the UK & Ireland by the end of this month, with Northern Irish viewers finally getting the chance to see the film which was set here.

Based on Kenneth Branagh's early life in Belfast, the film follows 9 year old Buddy (played by newcomer Jude Hill), who tries to juggle school, friends and girl troubles with the onset of the troubles in Northern Ireland in the late '60s.

It also stars Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Ciaran Hinds and Judi Dench, and has received numerous awards since it first did the rounds at film festivals.

The film began showing at US cinemas late last year. Here's a look at why it took so long to arrive at UK & Ireland cinemas:

Why was the film released in US cinemas first?

Belfast was initially set for general release in the UK & Ireland at the same time as the release in the US, which was on November 12th.

To coincide with this, Belfast had its Irish premiere at the Waterfront Hall on November 4th, as part of the Belfast Film Festival.

However, the film's UK & Ireland release date was pushed back by two months to January 21st.

The studio and production company didn't give any official explanation for this delay this delay, however it may simply have been down to marketing and/or concerns over the potential for another lockdown during the winter period.

Either way, audiences will finally have a chance to catch up with those across the Atlantic by the end of next week.
