Who won Great British Bake Off 2019? Winner of Channel 4 show has been announced

The winner of the Great British Bake Off 2019 has been revealed.

After 13 contestants initially entered the tent more than two months ago to battle it out for the prize, tonight's episode on Channel 4 whittled it down to the final one left standing.

And, in a dramatic finale, the winner was revealed as David Atherton.

The final was played out between Steph Blackwell, David and Alice Fevronia, with each contestant having to impress judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood to be crowned this year's winner.

And David, 36, was able to take the crown in a nailbiting finish, with the winner announced in front of this season's contestants and the finalists' family and friends.

He impressed the judges with a picnic-themed showstopper, going onto say that he had "saved the best till last".

In a tweet after the episode was shown to millions on Channel 4, the Bake Off account posted: "He saved the best till last. A huge congratulations to David - winner of The Great British Bake Off 2019! #GBBOFinal ."

In a further post, it said: "Never underestimate the underdog."
