Who will replace Boris Johnson if he steps down as Prime Minister?

Boris Johnson is closer than ever to leaving office after admitting attending a Downing Street party despite it being illegal to do so.

The Prime Minister has admitted breaking lockdown rules while thousands of people were dying with Covid-19.

On Wednesday he said he believed the gathering - that 100 staff were invited to - 'technically falls within the guidance'.

He told the House of Commons during PMQs that he only attended for 25 minutes and "believed implicitly that this was a work event".

His apology appears to have done little to lessen mounting anger among Tory politicians over the incident, and a number of MPs and MSPs have called on him to resign.

Douglas Ross, the leader of the Scottish Tories, said that the Prime Minister's position was "no longer tenable".

If the Prime Minister were to step down, a leadership contest would be triggered - with contenders then able to make their bid for party leader.

Bookmakers have a clear favourite for who would replace the Prime Minister, should this happen.

William Hill currently has Rishi Sunak placed at 13/8 odds.

Liz Truss is second favourite - at 10/3.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer comes in third place, with his odds at 11/2. For this to happen, there would have to be a General Election - which Labour would have to win.
