Who will direct the Call of Duty movie?

Activision and Paramount have recently announced that the massively popular Call of Duty series will be adapted for the big screen. So, which COD is being adapted? Black Ops? Modern Warfare? Zombies?! And, perhaps easier to answer, who's directing the flick?

A lot of outlets are likely already coming up with lists of dream casts and directors—many of which'll contain the Internet-mandatory likes of Nolan, Villeneuve, and Tarantino—but we can narrow it down to something a little bit more realistic, and definitely more fitting.

Paramount is in charge of making the Call of Duty movie a reality, so we're more likely to see a director who has a proven track record with the studio. A great choice would be Christopher McQuarrie, both the man who breathed new life into the Mission: Impossible series and the man who already deserves some rest from the Mission: Impossible series. McQuarrie could knock this one out of the park. He's just the best in the business when it comes to literally realistic action sequences. He's also a proven screenwriter, an essential skill for a series with so many story options to choose from.

But McQuarrie isn't the most likely option, nor the one Paramount seems to be teasing already. That would be Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1, starring Brad Pitt. The studio stated, “We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve.”

That makes it pretty evident they're either going for Kosinski or someone they believe will be able to pull off his brand of high-octane action that somehow never fails to look grounded. Kosinski has two projects in pre-production, so he might not be available to direct Call of Duty so soon, but Paramount didn't mention any release date, so he's not out of the cards.

And though Kosinski is yet to direct a video game movie adaptation, he's no stranger to working with video games. He's actually the director of Halo 3's fantastic Starry Night ad.

While Kosinski's not the auteurial kind likely to take Call of Duty in a completely new direction that'll blow everyone's minds like the original Modern Warfare did, he knows how to play the studio game and is very competent at bringing realistic and spectacular flair to his films.
