Who Was Savitha Shan? Parents Launch Scholarship After UT Shooting

A Bright Journey Cut Short

Born in Texas, Savitha moved to Austin with her family at the age of two. She grew up in the city, attending Baranoff Elementary School before graduating from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, where she distinguished herself as a dedicated and high-achieving student.

At the University of Texas at Austin, Savitha pursued a demanding dual degree—combining a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Alongside her academic pursuits, she gained professional experience through internships at leading firms, including PwC.

Her interests extended beyond academics. Since 2021, she had been actively volunteering with the Austin Tamil Sangam, supporting and engaging with the local Tamil community. As a high school student, she demonstrated an entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirit by launching a sticker shop on Etsy, donating her earnings to education-focused nonprofits.

Savitha also connected with a wider audience through her YouTube channel, Studyfluff, where she built a following of over 20,000 subscribers by sharing study tips and insights.

A Life Full of Dreams

Savitha’s life was enriched by her love for travel and exploration. She had visited 25 countries with her family and aspired to see all seven wonders of the world—an ambition that reflected her curiosity and zest for life.

Yet, perhaps her most meaningful dream was rooted in service. She envisioned creating a nonprofit organization to help underprivileged students access higher education—an idea that has now become the foundation of her legacy.

Honouring Her Legacy Through Education

In the wake of their loss, Savitha’s parents have chosen to honour her memory by turning her dream into reality. They have established the Savitha Shan Endowment Scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin, aimed at supporting students from low-income families in pursuing higher education.

The scholarship is expected to assist 8 to 10 students annually, specifically those whose family income is below $125,000. The family hopes to raise $500,000, which the university has pledged to match, bringing the total endowment to $1 million. The first scholarships are expected to be awarded starting in 2027.

“She’s not physically here anymore, but we wanted to make sure her passion continues so we can benefit society,” said her father, Shan Muthian. “This endowed scholarship is paying it forward for Savitha.” In recognition of her dedication and achievements, the University of Texas at Austin will also award Savitha a posthumous dual degree—fulfilling her goal of completing her education.

A Lasting Impact

Though her life was tragically cut short, Savitha Shan’s story continues through the lives she will touch in the years to come. Her legacy—rooted in education, generosity, and purpose—serves as a powerful reminder of how one individual’s dreams can inspire lasting change.
