A tragic police shooting in Mississippi has sparked national outrage after a 1-year-old boy, Kohen Wiley, was killed during an encounter between law enforcement officers and a vehicle outside a Walmart.
The incident, which took place in Senatobia, Mississippi, is now under investigation and has prompted calls for transparency, accountability, and answers from the child's family and community members.
What happened to Kohen Wiley?
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), officers responded to a reported shoplifting incident at a Walmart in Senatobia on June 14. Authorities say officers attempted to stop a vehicle connected to the call after occupants left the store and got into a car.
Investigators said the driver allegedly drove toward officers and nearly struck one of them. An officer then fired at the vehicle. The car left the scene and later arrived at a hospital, where 1-year-old Kohen Wiley was pronounced dead. Another occupant of the vehicle suffered serious injuries.

Why is the case drawing attention?
The death of a child during a police response has triggered widespread concern across the United States.
Family members and community advocates have questioned whether deadly force was necessary and are demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Kohen's grandfather described the toddler as a happy child whose life was cut short far too soon.
The case has also gained attention because the initial police response was reportedly linked to an alleged shoplifting incident. Witness accounts and statements from family members have added to the public scrutiny surrounding the events leading up to the shooting.
Officer Hunter Foster faces scrutiny
Public attention has increasingly focused on Senatobia police officer Hunter Foster, who has been identified in multiple media reports as the officer involved in the shooting.
While officials have not announced any criminal charges, critics and activists are calling for an independent review of the incident. Social media users and community leaders have also demanded the release of additional information, including body-camera footage and investigative findings. According to reports, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting.
What have authorities said?
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has stated that the case remains active and that investigators are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Senatobia Police Department has said it intends to share verified information as the investigation progresses.
Meanwhile, Walmart said it was saddened by the incident and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities during the investigation. “We’re saddened by what took place at our Senatobia, MS, store," a Walmart spokesperson told WMC. "The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority. We’re working with law enforcement as they continue investigating."
Community demands answers
In the days since the shooting, calls for justice have grown louder. Community advocates assisting the family have urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and provide clear answers about how a routine police response ended with the death of a 1-year-old child.
The tragedy has reignited broader conversations about police use of force, pursuit policies, and the risks faced by children caught in law enforcement encounters.
Kohen Wiley family taking legal action
Wiley's family retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the attorney's office announced on June 16. "A 1-year-old child is dead because police officers in Mississippi opened fire on a car in a crowded Walmart parking lot," said Crump in the statement. "Kohen Wiley was a baby. His mother, who has not been charged with any crime, says she was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car. They fired anyway, leading to the death of an innocent 1-year-old. We intend to seek justice for baby Kohen and the life that was stolen from him.”
