A woman trusts her locked Owala water bottle in her tote bag, thinking it won’t leak on her new MacBook laptop. However, she shares her dismay when her tote bag fills with water.
In a video with over 5.6 million views, TikToker User66777256 (@user667772561) opens her tote bag. Her laptop, pens, a few pieces of paper, and her closed Owala bottle sit in nearly an inch of water.
The Owala bottle doesn’t appear to be unlocked; however, it still leaked in her tote bag.
How did her Owala bottle leak on her laptop?
The caption reads, “Put my LOCKED Owala in my tote bag to go to the library, now I have to pay over $200 to repair my brand new MacBook. Thank you, Owala.”
Owala water bottles claim to be leak-proof and insulated, according to the brand’s website. So, what happened to the TikToker’s bottle?
Owala bottles lock by pressing down on the lid, which locks it into place with a tab on the front of the bottle. Then, users can press a button on the front to release the seal. However, commenters point out that the TikToker may have taken off a key part of the locking mechanism.
“Let me guess, you took the black rubber piece off so it would open faster? I learned the hard way too,” one writes.
“Now did we put the rubber stopper on..?” one asks.
“Mind you this person knows their bottle didint come with a seal for the cap and yet they still put it in the bag with their MacBook instead of not doing that until they buy a seal for the cap or get a new water bottle………,” another suggests.
“My owala has never leaked on me, where is your rubber stopper at rn,” a third asks.
“I found out bc of this video that mine didn’t have [a seal],” the TikToker replies in a comment. She isn’t the only Owala user to experience the same issue. The Mary Sue previously reported that a Target customer’s Owala didn’t come with a rubber seal, causing a spill.
Is the TikToker to blame for the spill?
Despite the TikToker’s frustration, other Owala users suggest that they are to blame for the spill—not the water bottle.
“That’s not Owala’s fault. That’s YOURwala’s fault,” one says.
“Girl ik it’s upsetting but you’re tagging and blaming owala like they did this?? idc how great my water bottle is im not tossing it in a bag with my valuables,” another writes.
“My owala has never failed me. are you sure that it was locked and tightened all the way?” a third asks.
Others warn the TikToker to never carry a water bottle in the same bag as a laptop.
“Girl. TRUST No water bottle in your purse with your electronics. It doesn’t matter the brand or price. Been there before,” a commenter writes.
“Now why would you put a water bottle in the same bag as a laptop?” another asks.
“Why would you put a water bottle into the same space as an electronic?! I love my Owala, have never had an issue. But I would never, ever trust ANY water bottle at all in the same bag as a laptop lol feels like you’re tempting the universe,” a third user warns.
