'Who needs holidays abroad...' crowds flock to Formby Beach to soak up sun on hottest day of the year

Hundreds of sunseekers flocked to Formby Beach today to enjoy the hottest day of the year so far.

The atmosphere at the beauty spot was said to be 'great,' with families' being praised for maintaining social distancing and taking their litter with them.

Formby Beach, in Merseyside, is a popular spot for those looking to escape Greater Manchester, as it boasts miles of untouched sandy coastline.

Pictures from today (Sunday 13) show the beach busy with families enjoying the weather, as temperatures rose to around 26 degrees in the North West.

Sunseekers enjoyed swimming in the sea, making sand castles and enjoying the warm weather.

Dylan Longmate, from Tameside, praised crowds for enjoying themselves in a way that 'felt safe.'

"The atmosphere was great, people were socially distanced, people were taking their litter home and to the bins and everyone was having fun," he said, speaking to the M.E.N.

"It was nice to see family’s enjoying themselves in a safe way and it felt like we are getting some normality.

"Who needs holidays abroad when we have fantastic natural beauty on our door step."

Temperatures were predicted to rise to 30C in some parts of the country today, as England took on Croatia in their first Euros fixture.

The hottest temperature recorded so far this year was 28.3C (82.94F) in Northolt, north-west London, on June 2.

Parts of the UK were expected to be hotter than holiday destinations in Ibiza, Mykonos and even California due to a "jet stream" moving in from the south.

But the heatwave is set to come to an abrupt end later this week, as Greater Manchester and other parts of the country could be hit with thunderstorms.

The Met Office have issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Greater Manchester, parts of Yorkshire, and other areas of the UK.

The current warning is in place from 6pm on Wednesday (16 June) and 6am on Friday (18 June).
