Who is Victoria Canal? Singer at Centre of Michael Franti Sexual Abuse Allegations as Soulshine Cruise Gets Cancelled

Singer-songwriter Victoria Canal has accused Michael Franti of sexual abuse and grooming, claiming the misconduct began when she was 19. Canal shared her story on Instagram, aiming to warn young women entering the music industry to stay vigilant. Following her allegations, the Soulshine At Sea cruise, where Franti was headlining, was cancelled. Several artists, including Tank And The Bangas, Dispatch and Liz Vice, withdrew from the event in solidarity. Franti responded by denying the abuse claims, acknowledging a past consensual relationship while admitting a power imbalance due to their age difference and his position in the industry. He expressed regret over the situation but firmly disputed any version suggesting non-consensual conduct.

Victoria Canal, born 11 August 1998 in Munich, Germany, is a Spanish-American singer and songwriter known for her emotive pop music. Raised in Barcelona, Tokyo and Dubai, she began classical piano and voice training despite being born without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome. Canal started writing songs at 11 and later studied at the Jazz Conservatory in Barcelona and Berklee College of Music. She has toured with artists like Hozier and Coldplay and received multiple Ivor Novello Awards. Identifying as a queer, disabled, mixed-heritage woman, Canal actively advocates for inclusivity and representation in the music industry.

The allegations against Franti have caused significant repercussions, including cancelled events and artist withdrawals. Both parties have shared their perspectives, yet the claims remain unverified. The situation highlights the importance of addressing power dynamics, supporting survivors, and maintaining accountability within the music industry. As this story develops, it underscores the need for continued dialogue and reform to ensure safety and integrity in entertainment.
