Who is Sir Clive Alderton? King’s most senior aide confirms he will step down from role

  • Sir Clive Alderton, the most senior aide to King Charles and principal private secretary to King Charles and Queen Camilla , has announced his decision to step down from his position next year.
  • His resignation is planned for May, coinciding with his 60th birthday , and will mark two decades of service within the royal household .
  • In a message to staff, Sir Clive expressed that it has been the 'greatest imaginable honour' to serve the King and Queen during historic times, promising continued support in a less formal capacity.
  • Prior to joining the royal household, Sir Clive had a career as a diplomat, serving in the Foreign Office from 1986 with postings in countries such as Belgium, France, Poland, and Singapore.
  • He first joined the royal household in 2006 as deputy private secretary to Charles and Camilla, then the Prince and Princess of Wales , before becoming their principal private secretary in 2015, and holds various royal honours and is a trustee of the King Charles III Charitable Fund.
