Who is leading the Giro d'Italia 2026? Afonso Eulálio takes pink on stage 5

Afonso Eulálio.

The top 10 of the Giro d'Italia was turned upside down after a breakaway day on stage five, with Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) taking the pink jersey.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) only lasted one day in the race lead, with five escapees jumping above him on the general classification on Wednesday.

Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won the stage in Potenza, but is 2:51 behind the new race leader, Eulálio.

The Portuguese rider also now leads the young rider's classification too, after a rainy day in southern Italy. The peloton came in seven minutes behind the remnants of the breakaway, after a cautious run in.

Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) is still at the top of the points competition. Thanks to his exploits in Bulgaria, Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta) is in the lead of the mountains classification.
